Theory Lesson

Teachers explain key themes and analysis techniques which are applied to a variety of texts and extracts throughout the term. Students’ understanding and written work is actively reviewed by our expert teachers, keeping the whole class on track.
Learn how to read effectively and get to the heart of what a text has to say. Improving in English cannot happen without a solid foundation in reading.
Students learn how to apply textual analysis to a wide range of literature, plays, essays and poetry from the 2021 NESA recommended literature list.
Teachers guide students through their weekly extracts, showing them how to pick up on significant structural or language devices and the development of themes.
Application
30 minStudents complete written exercises in their theory books to lock down the NESA rubric under the guidance of our expert teachers.
Students attempt written analysis questions in their theory books to lock down their skills in reading and writing, while also developing an understanding of textual representation. Teachers provide guidance on response structure and comprehensiveness.
The fundamental process of applying textual evidence to syllabus ideas is emphasised in every theory lesson at QED, setting students up for strong performance in their school examinations.
Students receive homework each week to complete and consolidate their understanding of the material. Homework is returned with detailed marking and students can leverage QED’s free workshops to discuss feedback on their written work.
